Abstract
Despite several decades of investigation, not only do the immediate molecular functions of phytochrome remain unidentified, but the transduction chains between these immediate molecular functions and ultimate biological responses remain inadequately described. While insufficient by itself, knowledge of the distribution and localization of phytochrome provides important information that will assist in both formulating and testing hypotheses concerning phytochrome function. The question of phytochrome distribution and localization within the plant can be divided into two aspects. On the one hand, there is the question of how phytochrome is partitioned among the tissues, organs and organ systems of a plant, that is of its intercellular distribution. On the other hand, there is the question of where phytochrome is found within a single cell, that is of its mfracellular localization.
