Abstract
Plant genetic resources represent both the basis for agricultural development and a reservoir of genetic adaptability that acts as a buffer against environmental change. The erosion of these resources threatens world food security. The need to conserve and utilize plant genetic resources as a safeguard against an unpredictable future is well recognized. The prospect of dwindling plant genetic diversity, coupled with increased demands on these resources, has propelled them into the centre of global discussions on the environment and sustainable development.
