Abstract
We attempt to categorize on the basis of current knowledge, the most important biotic and abiotic stresses faced by chickpea, lentil, pea, faba bean, and grasspea in their major production regions in Asia, Africa, and Oceania. Foliar diseases rank high overall as major contributors to yield loss, whereas root diseases tend to assume greater importance at lower latitudes. Despite the obvious signs of damage caused by various insect pests, their impact on yield is less. Among abiotic stresses, drought is a major factor in reducing yield. The cool season food legumes are also very sensitive to even minor imbalances in soil nutrients. For each stress we considered the prospects for alleviating the problem. Although availability of genetic resistance to the major constraints of foliar diseases and drought have so far proven to be limited, we propose that they offer attractive opportunities for research investment. Redesign of canopies such that they are less conducive to establishment and growth of fungal diseases, the use of short-duration cultivars to escape drought, and the incorporation of particular drought-resistant traits are some of the options worth pursuing. The grasspea appears well-adapted to a range of biotic and abiotic stress conditions and we suggest that a greater understanding of this crop’s adaptive traits would give indications of how best to improve stress tolerance of the other cool season food legumes.
