Abstract
Interest in the food and feeding behaviour of larval chironomids has expanded in recent years. This is primarily because of:
-
improvement of taxonomic keys to allow their identification;
-
attempts to control pestiferous emergences from lentic habitats (Hilsenhoff, 1966; Ali, 1990);
-
recognition of the energetic importance of chironomids in freshwater ecosystems (Benke et al., 1984; Soluk, 1985; Berg and Hellenthal, 1991,1993).
