Somatic Embryogenesis in Woody Plants

Part of the book series: Forestry Sciences ((FOSC,volume 44-46))

Abstract

The chestnut tree (genus Castanea) belongs to the Fagaceae, along with beeches (Fagus), oaks (Quercus), evergreen chinkapins (Castanopsis) and tanoaks (Lithocarpus). Chestnut trees became distinct from other members of their family as early as 43 million years ago, and probably earlier (Rutter, 1987).
