Model and Prototype Draft Tube Pressure Pulsations

Hydraulic Machinery and Cavitation

Abstract

All producers of Francis turbines daily meet the problem of draft tube vortex appearance and its consequences [1,2,3,4]. Limitations in turbine operation because of the vortex appearance and undesirable consequences on hydraulic system are sufficient reason for its intensive researching. According to such unpleasant and sometimes only hard soluble consequences on the prototypes, the research is directed to model tests and numerical flow analysis with the aim to predict consequences on prototype.

During last several years intensive investigations of draft tube pressure pulsation on various specific speed turbines have been performed Tests were made in the wide turbine operating range from partial to full load and from runaway to head above optimum. Cavitation and various kinds of air admission influence on the pressure pulsation as well as on the efficiency characteristics were invesigated.

All pressure pulsation were investigated on the model and prototype of wide range turbine specific speeds (ns) 159, 213, 340 and 400. Achieved results of the transfer from the model to the prototype has been presented and analysed.
