Abstract
Jacquet-Lagrèze’s article on semiorders in multi-attribute utility theory (MAUT) is innovative and useful. Innovative, because it combines two previously separate concepts in utility theory, that of semiorders and that of multi-attribute preferences in modeling multi-criteria decision making. Useful, because it describes detailed techniques for assessing multi-attribute preferences that can be applied whenever traditional models are not feasible because of a failure of the weak order assumption. The perspective of Jacquet-Lagrèze’s paper is mainly technological, dealing with the ‘how’ of preference assessment rather than with an axiomatic formulation of his models. To understand the following comments it is crucial to know that they were written from a different perspective toward the treatment of semiorders in MAUT. The orientation of these comments is measurement theoretic asking for a justification of models rather than for the techniques of their implementation.
