Abstract
Drought-induced shortages of water supply have adverse impacts on human activities and ecological systems. A number of measures can be undertaken to avoid or lessen such impacts. Both long-term and short-term measures, which are aimed toward increasing supply or reducing demand, should be considered. This chapter provides a review of alternative approaches for protecting the established uses of water against future droughts and summarizes the practice and status of drought protection and preparedness in the United States.
