The South American Carabid Fauna: Endemic Tribes and Tribes with African Relationships

  • Chapter
Carabid Beetles

Abstract

The markedly divergent and diverse, but poorly known Neotropical ground beetle fauna (330 genera, about 4,400 species) includes many groups of special interest for studies of relationships and origin of the Neotropical fauna. Most Neotropical carabid taxa belong to widespread tribes, and in the Neotropical Region are widespread from Mexico (and often southern United States) to South America, including the Antilles. Many groups have relatives in the Nearctic Region, but relationships are practically impossible to discern at present because of insufficient taxonomic study.
