Abstract
In the northeastern region of Japan, there is an expression, ‘attata,’ which literally means ‘was being affected by.’ This is an old expression and the exact meaning of the word is unclear, but it seems to be ‘apoplexy,’ which has been observed since the ancient Greek era. It occurs suddenly and the patient loses consciousness, resulting in motor paralysis. This is the so-called knocked-down condition that the people in the region call ‘atari.’ From its general symptoms, it can be differentiated from heart disease.
