Mineralization by Organisms and the Evolution of Biomineralization

  • Chapter
Biomineralization and Biological Metal Accumulation

Abstract

An updated compilation of biogenic mineral diversity and distribution is presented and a comparison is made between pathologically- and normally-formed minerals. The known associations of different minerals in individual organisms are tabulated and the various mineral forming processes involved in their deposition, are discussed. In particular, it is noted that “organic matrix-mediated” mineralization seems to be utilized by certain monerans for forming mineral deposits. This observation may have important implications with regard to the evolution of “matrix-mediated” mineralization.
