Abstract
Limit equilibrium methods can be misleading when used to compute factors of safety. Also they do not provide information about the development of failure. The finite element method is shown to be particularly useful for showing how failure initiates, and the likely collapse mechanism. It can also be used to determine the safety factor. There are two methods — the “direct” and the “enhanced limit” method. These have a research role for checking safety factors computed using conventional limit analyses. The direct method appears to have the most potential.
