Abstract
Cosmic ray research had a distinguished history at the University of Chicago in the 1930’s through the work of A.H. Compton, M. Schein and their associates. Figure 1 is an old photograph of the participants who attended the International Cosmic Ray Conference at the University in the summer of 1939-a picture which reveals—through the now-famous names of those present—the broad, intellectual interest in both the elementary particle and the astrophysical/geophysical aspects of cosmic rays in the 1930’s (Symposium, 1939). Soon thereafter these fields of research were disrupted by World War II, and it was not until well into 1946 that cosmic ray research again became established throughout the world.
