Nitrates in Groundwater

Abstract

The ever increasing concentration of nitrates in groundwater is becoming a problem of serious concern. Most of the nitrate loads come from the use of mineral fertilizers. But there are some more sources responsible for the continual increase of groundwater pollution from nitrates, e.g. municipal sewage, dumping sites, feedlots, effluents of septic tanks, etc. Biological fixation of airborne nitrogen in the soil cannot be neglected, either, as a contributing factor.
