Abstract
Many marine heat-flow density studies have been completed since the time of pioneering work of Bullard, Revelle, Maxwell, Ewing, and others, and much has been learned about the surficial and deep seated thermal workings of the Earth. Generalized heat-flow density ‘mapping’ has provided valuable information, but in the future, measurements are likely to be directed more toward solving specific geophysical problems. For these purposes, frequently an instrument must be thoughtfully designed to suit a particular measurement environment or to provide the accuracy necessary to resolve a particular problem. Thus, before any general guidelines for determining marine heat-flow density are suggested or examples of instrumentation given, it is worthwhile to consider briefly a few examples of contemporary problems in marine heat-flow density.
