Abstract

The Israel Mediterranean coasts form the southeastern part of the Levantine Basin. They are smoothly curved, forming a large arc that originates in northern Sinai and continues toward the Mt. Carmel promontory (Figure 1). These beaches belong to the edge of the Nile littoral cell that commences at the Nile River outlets at Rashid (Rosetta) and Dumyat (Damietta). The main net sand-transport in this cell is from the Nile Delta to north Sinai and the Israeli beaches, terminating at ‘Akko, northern Israel. Sand quantities gradually decrease from the sources towards the edge of the cell. Quartz is the main component of the sand, with some calcium-carbonate (broken-shells of local origin), and a wide range of heavy minerals. On the other hand, the ’Akko — Rosh Haniqra beaches belong to an independent littoral cell, and differ considerably in their mineralogy. Calcium carbonate grains, mostly of local sources, are the main components of this isolated cell, while quartz of Nilotic origin is represented in minute quantities.
