Cultivation of plants in vitro, where the culture conditions can be precisely controlled, is becoming increasingly widespread and important, e.g. commerical micropropagation of a wide range of plants; propagation of recalcitrant species; regeneration and propagation of novel materials produced by tissue culture methods.
