Abstract
Interference reflection microscopy was used to determine the influence of electrolyte concentration on the bacterium-substratum separation distance between attached Pseudomonas fluorescens and glass. The addition of sodium chloride caused a decrease in separation distance, which again increased when electrolyte was replaced by water. Calcium chloride also caused a decrease in separation distance. However, with P. fluorescens strain H2S, a particularly adhesive strain, this effect was only partially reversible when calcium chloride was replaced by water.
