Abstract
Historical supernovae occupy a special place in the study of supernova remnants, being the only ones whose age can be definitely ascertained and for which anything can be said about the nature of the initiating event. After a brief introduction, this lecture considers the nine Galactic supernovae for which historical records exist, and summarizes the characteristics of their associated remnants. All have been observed at radio and X-ray wavelengths, and most also produce detectable optical and infrared emission. The evolution of the shock kinematics is then briefly reviewed, and the degree of deceleration summarized for the six remnants where this information is available. Finally, the statistics of SNR in the solar neighborhood is considered, and it is concluded that the historical record over the last two millenia is probably quite incomplete for supernovae beyond a few kpc.
