Abstract
The use of chronic dialysis to sustain the lives of children who suffer end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has been available in developed countries for more than 30 years. During the past two decades, advances in technology have made long-term dialysis a viable treatment option for pediatric ESRD patients of all ages, from newborns to adolescents1. While a successful kidney transplant remains the treatment of choice for all pediatric ESRD patients, more than three-fourths of these children require chronic dialysis while awaiting transplantation for periods ranging from a few months to several years2.
