Im Rahmen des Customer Relationship Management (Parvatiyar/Sheth 2001) versuchen Anbieter profitable Kunden zu akquirieren, langfristig an sich zu binden sowie verlorene Kunden ggfs. zurückzugewinnen (Bolton/Lemon/Verhoef 2004). Der Fokus sollte dabei auf einer wertorientierten Gestaltung von Kundenbeziehungen liegen (Tomczak/Rudolf-Sipötz 2006). Ziel ist der Aufbau einer Kundenbasis, die langfristig zum Erfolg beiträgt. Inwieweit ein solcher Erfolgsbeitrag bspw. durch gebundene Kunden tatsächlich zu erreichen ist, wird jedoch unterschiedlich diskutiert. So werden der Kundenbindung zahlreiche positive Effekte zugeschrieben: die Kunden sind bereit höhere Preise zu zahlen, generieren Weiterempfehlungen und kaufen häufiger und mehr. Damit wird das vorhandene Kundenpotenzial immer stärker ausgeschöpft. Kritische Stimmen weisen jedoch darauf hin, dass gebundene Kunden auch verstärkt Rabatte oder kostenlose Zusatzleistungen einfordern und damit den Unternehmenserfolg schmälern können. Die Konsequenz dieser Diskussion ist offensichtlich — eine Wirkungsanalyse von Marketingmaßnahmen über rein voröronomische Größen wie bspw. Kundenbindung reicht nicht aus. Die ökonomischen Konsequenzen dieser Marketingassets müssen auf den Prüfstand gestellt werden. Einige Ansatzpunkte zur tatsächlich erfolgsorientierten Gestaltung von Geschäftsbeziehungen stellt Abbildung 1-1 dar.
