Konvergenz scheint derzeit ein so genannter „Mega-Trend“ zu sein, der verschiedene Branchen und Disziplinen zusammenbringt. Erst kürzlich hat die Europäische Kommission eine „High-Level Expert Group“ ins Leben gerufen, um gesellschaftliche Implikationen von konvergierenden Technologien und Märkten zu analysieren.1 Tendenzen von Industriekonvergenz kennzeichnen viele vormals getrennt agierende Industriezweige.2 Konvergenz bezeichnet dabei das Zusammenwachsen verschiedener Industrien, die bisher weitgehend gesondert voneinander waren. Beispielsweise hat die Konvergenz der Telekommunikations- und Computerbranche, initiiert durch die Digitalisierung von Daten, zu hybriden Produkten wie BlackBerry3, Mobiltelefon mit Kamerafunktion etc. geführt.
