Abstract
The unicellular green alga Micrasterias belongs to one of the most favorable organisms in experimental cell biology. This because of its relatively large size, its rapid cell growth and development, its Symmetrie cell pattern, and because it is easily cultivated under artificial culture conditions. One of the first cell biologists to use this organism for experimental studies, especially for morphogenetic experiments, was the Finnish plant physiologist Hans Waris. In 1950 he introduced a useful culture medium (Waris-solution) that made experimental studies of growth and development possible for the first time (Waris 1950). With elegant techniques applied to living cells Kallio (1951, 1957, 1963) continued and extended these experiments, which were concerned with the influence of the nucleus on cytomorphogenesis in Micrasterias. At the same time, the Austrian physiologist K. HÖfler and his coworkers introduced desmids and especially Micrasterias as very useful objects for cell-physiological purposes.
