Zusammenfassung
Die Filmindustrie stellt einen Wirtschaftszweig mit großer ökonomischer Bedeutung dar. Im Jahr 2002 betrug der weltweite Umsatz an den Kinokassen rund $18 Mrd., mit dem Verleih von Filmen auf Video/DVD wurden Einnahmen in Höhe von $14 Mrd. erzielt und die Einnahmen aus dem Verkauf von DVDs und Videokassetten betrugen über $17 Mrd. (Omsyc 2003). Ein wesentliches Charakteristikum der Filmbranche ist die große Schwankungsbreite des Einspielergebnisses bei zunehmender Kapitalintensität von Filmprojekten. Die durchschnittlichen Produktionskosten eines US-amerikanischen Kinofilmes belaufen sich gegenwärtig auf $58,8 Mio., wobei die Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Vorstoßes in die Gewinnzone bei nur ca. 30% liegt (MPAA 2002). Die ökonomische Begründung für Aktivitäten in der risikointensiven Filmbranche sind die hohen Gewinnmargen im Falle eines Kassenerfolges. Die Generierung eines solchen „Blockbusters“ wird jedoch durch eine große Anzahl an Konkurrenzfilmen erschwert, was zur Folge hat, dass sich die Marketingausgaben kontinuierlich auf nunmehr durchschnittlich $30,6 Mio. pro Film erhöht haben.
