Zusammenfassung
Die Gattung Helicobacter umfasst gramnegative, mikroaerophile, gebogene oder spiralförmige Stäbchen. Die meisten der über 30 bekannten Helicobacter-Spezies zeichnen sich durch starke Produktion von Urease aus. Humanmedizinisch wichtigster Vertreter ist Helicobacter (H.) pylori; weitere humanpathogene Spezies sind „H. heilmannii“, H. cinaedi und H. fennelliae, die anderen Helicobacter-Arten sind in erster Linie tierpathogen. Die Spezies H. pylori wurde 1982 erstmals angezüchtet. Angesichts starker Vorbehalte der Fachwelt, dass eine bakterielle Infektion die häufigsten Magenkrankheiten verursachen könne, bewies einer der Erstbeschreiber (Barry Marshall) 1983 im Selbstversuch, dass der Erreger eine akute Gastritis auslöst. Marshall und Robin Warren erhielten für ihre Entdeckung 2005 den Medizin-Nobelpreis.
