Zusammenfassung
Der Name des Sozialpsychologen Stanley Milgram (1933 – 1984) wird insbesondere mit seinen Anfang der 1960er Jahre durchgeführten Untersuchungen zum autoritätshörigen Verhalten verbunden. Neben diesen als » Milgram-Experiment « weit über die Fachgrenzen hinaus bekannt gewordenen Studien steht sein Name aber auch für die netzwerkanalytische Erforschung des sogenannten » small world «-Phänomens, also der Beobachtung, dass zufällig zusammentreffende Personen häufig einen gemeinsamen Bekannten aufweisen und man aufgrund der hinter diesem Phänomen stehenden Netzwerkstruktur über eine vergleichsweise geringe Zahl von Kontaktpersonen potentiell jede Person auf der Welt erreichen kann. Dieser Sachverhalt hat die Netzwerkforschung bereits seit den 1950er Jahren beschäftigt (s. Pool/Kochen → 1978 [1958]), Milgram kommt aber das Verdienst zu, durch eine Reihe von Studien die Entwicklung und Erprobung eines empirischen Verfahrens zur Ermittlung der durchschnittlichen Länge entsprechender Pfade das Phänomen erforschbar und damit auch der Netzwerkanalyse zugänglich gemacht zu haben.
