Evidences of Tidal Environment Deposition in the Calcare Massiccio Formation (Central Apennines—Lower Lias)

Abstract

The limy Calcare Massiccio Formation outcrops in wide areas in southern Liguria, Toscana, Umbria, Marche, northern Lazio, and Abruzzi. This formation, up to 400 meters thick, overlies a thin-bedded unit (Avicula contorta beds) that consists of micritic limestones and marls with isolated, very thin levels of gypsum. This member overlies a thick sequence of evaporitic anhydrites and dolomites, which represent the first marine sedimentation of the Mesozoic Apennine sequence together with the upper levels of the underlying Verrucano Formation. The top of the Calcare Massiccio is overlain by thinbedded pelagic limestone. The age of the formation is defined at the base by the underlying A. contorta beds (Rhaetian Auct.), while on the top it varies, being Upper Hettanian in the Tosco-Ligure zone and Upper Pliesbachian in the Marche region.
