Theory of the Raman Effect in Metals

  • Conference paper
Light Scattering Spectra of Solids

Abstract

A theory of the Raman scattering of light by the optical vibration modes of polyatomic metals is presented. A microscopic theory has been developed which describes the modulation of the electronic susceptibility tensor χ μν (ω) by long wavelength optical phonons. We will discuss the various mechanisms which contribute to the change in χ μν with excitation of an optical mode. We point out that in a metal, χ μν may be modulated by odd parity LO phonons, since carrier density fluctuations are associated with them.
