Active Site Metals as Probes of Local Conformation and Function of Enzymes

  • Conference paper
Structural and Functional Aspects of Enzyme Catalysis

Abstract

Metals play roles in catalysis, hormonal, and other regulatory functions and their control, the synthesis and stabilization of the structure of macromolecules, muscle contraction, nerve conduction, and transport. Cobalt, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, zinc, and yet others are known to be essential, many of them in the mechanism of action of particular enzymes.

Dedicated to Professor Dr. Helmut Holzer on the occasion of his 65th Birthday, in appreciation of his contributions to Biological Chemistry
