Summary
Conservative treatment for patients with chronic low-back pain, who are unable to work, should be performed by a multidisciplinaryteam ofphysicians, psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and sports therapists. Only in this way can all contributing aspects of this syndrome be recognized adequately.
Pain reduction and improvement of physical capacities are not the only important aims in pain therapy. Active involving the patient in the treatment process should modify the patient’s concept of monocausal diseare and its passive medical treatment, and help him to overcome the passive behavior which perpetuates the chronicity process. Returning to work or ergonomic changes at the work-place can stabilize the treatment outcome.
