Abstract
Parasitism is a one-sided organism relationship in which one of the organisms benefits at the expense of the other. The parasite uses the host as a source or supply of food. Parasites that cause disease and possibly death of the host are called pathogens (Ahmadjian and Paracer, 1986). It is typical of parasitism that the host populations are greatly reduced in numbers. Selective parasitism on one phytoplankton species will favor the development of other species, and in this way it can be one of the factors influencing seasonal succession (Canter and Lund, 1953; Reynolds, 1973). Although parasites are known for both marine and freshwater phytoplankton species, and also for nonplanktonic algae, the emphasis in this chapter is placed upon the parasites that infect freshwater phytoplankton.
