Summary
The influence of the herbicides metamitron, metribuzin, ethiozin and paraquat on growth and nitrogenase activity of Azospirillum lipoferum and A. brasilense was studied. It was observed that metamitron (35 ppm and 70 ppm) and ethiozin (20 ppm) do not exert any inhibitory effect on nitrogenase activity of these strains. On the other hand, metribuzin (7 ppm and 14 ppm) and ethiozin (50 ppm) caused a marked decrease in nitrogenase activity. Additionally, the effect of ethiozin was studied under the following modes of application: A) ethiozin was added to the media 24 h after inoculation. B) Carbon source was added to the media 24 h after inoculation. According to the mode of treatment ethiozin caused different effects on nitrogenase activity. The herbicide paraquat (10 ppm) exerted a transient inhibitory effect on the growth. The growth of A. brasilense and A. lipoferum was inhibited for 12 h and 24 h, respectively. However, thereafter, growth and nitrogenase activity were completely recoverred.
