Zusammenfassung
Ziel der folgenden Betrachtungen ist insbesondere der Nachweis, daß ein scheinbar so einfacher Begriff wie der der wirtschaftlichen Kennzahl — will man ihn befriedigend definieren und theoretisch durchdringen — nicht nur wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Sachverstand verlangt, sondern auch fundierte Kenntnisse aus der Mathematik und der Logik erfordert. Was haben wir unter wirtschaftlichen Kennzahlen (Kennziffern, Indizes) wie etwa dem Preisniveau, dem Preisindex, der Produktivität eines Produktionsfaktors oder Produktionsprozesses, der Wirtschaftlichkeit einer Investition, der Konzentration der Industrie, der Einkommens- und der Vermögensungleichheit zu verstehen ? Handelt es sich vielleicht trotz der Bezeichnung Kennzahlen gar nicht um Zahlen, sondern um mehr? Welches Vorgehen liegt zugrunde, wenn uns zum Beispiel das Statistische Bundesamt in Wiesbaden informiert, der Preisindex für die Lebenshaltung eines Vierpersonenhaushalts mit mittlerem Einkommen sei gegenüber dem Vorjahr jeweils um die folgenden Prozentzahlen:

gestiegen? Auf diese Fragen — wie auch auf eine Reihe weiterer Problemstellungen vorwiegend axiomatischer Art — wird im folgenden näher eingegangen.
