Abstract
The dependence of carotid body oxygen consumption upon the oxygen partial pressure (PO2) (3,10) provides a basic mechanism for PO2 detection, and the low-affinity cytochrome a 3 found by Mills and Jobsis (11) and probably located in type I cells accounts for the dependence of the carotid body oxygen consumption upon PO2 in an unusually wide range. The excitatory effect of mitochondrial electron transport inhibitors (CO, HCN, etc.) on chemoreceptors implies that mitochondrial oxygen consumption is involved in PO2 sensing. However, the excitation of chemoreceptors by uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation means that the cessation of a process energetically coupled to the electron transport (ATP synthesis, calcium uptake by mitochondria) could represent a necessary step in this excitation mechanism.
