Abstract
In this chapter we shall concentrate on those events taking place after radicle emergence, which are necessary for the maintenance of growth of the germinated seed, i.e. the supply of the breakdown products of stored reserves to the growing axis. For convenience we have divided the chapter such that each section covers the mobilization of one type of stored reserve (carbohydrate, lipid, protein or phosphorus-containing compounds) although it must be remembered that the storage organs of seeds usually contain substantial quantities of at least two major reserves and that degradation of these can occur concurrently. It is unfortunate that individual seed physiologists and biochemists have often concentrated their studies on the mobilization of one of the stored products within a seed and ignored the other(s). When different workers have studied the mobilization of the other product(s), they have often used different varieties or cultivars of the same species, germinated and grown under different conditions.
