Abstract
Current ideas on the structure, occurrence and function of plasmodesmata in higher plants are outlined in Chapter 2. In this Chapter further aspects of the formation, distribution and modification of plasmodesmata will be considered. ‘Primary formation’ will be used to refer to the formation of plasmodesmata at the time of cytokinesis, when a new wall is laid down, and ‘secondary formation’, to refer to formation of plasmodesmata in cell walls which have already formed.
