Abstract
The term smectites encompasses the group of phyllosilicates including montmorillonite and related clay minerals. The term is not universally accepted, however, and some prefer to call this group the montmorillonite or montmorillonite-saponite group. The word smectite has the advantage of being simple and generic. It is being used more and it is hoped that opposition to it will cease in the near future.
