Tuberculosis of the Gastrointestinal Tract and Peritoneum

  • Chapter
Clinical Imaging in Non-Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Abstract

In the past decade, two distinct patterns of intra-abdominal tuberculosis (TB) have emerged. First, the classical disease, affecting the peritoneum, gastrointestinal tract, lymphatic system and solid organs and, second, the disease as an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related condition. AIDS-related abdominal TB has a different pattern of symptoms, signs and pathology and is dealt with in a later chapter. In the years 1963–1986, 132 cases of peritoneal TB were reported in the USA, out of a total of 3942 records of extrapulmonary disease [1]. Of these, 71.2% of the 3942 cases fell amongst the racial minorities and the foreign born. In some studies, peritoneal TB occurred as a complicating illness in those patients already known to have hepatic cirrhosis or alcohol addiction [2,3].
