Abstract
The life conditions of naiads are governed by a multitude of environmental factors. Tolerance to some of these factors by the animal can be tested in aquaria, but such experiments necessarily have a limited duration, and laboratory conditions invariably differ from those in nature. Fortunately, some of the important environmental factors leave their record in the growth rate and chemistry of the shell.
