Framework and Driving Forces for the Evolution of Naiad Life Histories

  • Chapter
Ecology and Evolution of the Freshwater Mussels Unionoida

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 145))

Abstract

So far the various taxa of the Unionoida have been introduced (Chap. 1, this Vol.), the variability of life-history traits has been shown (Chaps. 5, 7, 6, this Vol.) and it is evident that tremendous losses occur during the glochidial stage (Chap. 11, this Vol.), whereas in permanent waters, the habitat of most naiads, the adults suffer only low mortality under natural conditions (Chap. 9, this Vol.).
