Abstract
This compendium records 139 critically assessed valid genera and 22 form-genera of Carboniferous blue-green, green and red algae. It also includes some umbellinids, algal cysts and incertae sedis. For each genus, it lists the valid species and assesses suprageneric attributions. It records stratigraphic range, geographic distribution and abundance. The role in carbonate sedimentation is emphasized.
The vast majority of algae are very long-ranging and cannot be used for precise age determination. Obvious exceptions are Calcifolium and Koninckopora.
