Depressive Störungen werden zunehmend eine Belastung für das Funktionieren unserer Gesellschaften (Weltgesundheitsbericht der WHO, 2001). Bereits 1990 stand die unipolare Depression weltweit an 4. Stelle aller Ursachen gesundheitlicher Beeinträchtigung und vorzeitiger Mortalität (Murray & Lopez, 1996). Nach den Berechnungen der WHO wird die Depression bis zum Jahr 2020 sogar auf den 2. Platz steigen, nur noch übertroffen von Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen. Dadurch wachsen die Gesundheitsausgaben in eine Höhe, die selbst für wohlhabende Gesellschaften kaum mehr finanzierbar sind. So verursachen Depressionen in Deutschland alleine Kosten von etwa 17 Mrd. Euro pro Jahr.
