Intellektuelle Beeinträchtigung ist von einem Mangel an kognitiven Fähigkeiten sowie von verringertem sozial-adaptiven Handlungsvermögen gekennzeichnet. Um die Erscheinungsformen der intellektuellen Beeinträchtigung von ähnlichen Zustandsbildern, wie z. B. der Altersdemenz oder den Folgen einer traumatischen Gehirnverletzung abzugrenzen, wird dieser Zustand mit Beginn vor dem Erwachsenenalter definiert. Ein signifikant niedriger Intelligenzquotient mit gleichzeitig deutlich verringerten Werten in einem der Verfahren zur Erfassung sozial-adaptiver Kompetenzen sind die operationalen Kriterien der Diagnose „intellektuelle Beeinträchtigung“.
