Fokus des folgenden Beispiels sind 2 geführte Expeditionsgruppen im Himalaya. Gruppe 1 mit dem neuseeländischen Expeditionsleiter Rob Hall, 2 Bergführern, 8 Sherpas als Gipfelbegleiter und 8 Kunden sowie Gruppe 2 mit dem US-amerikanischen Expeditionsleiter Scott Fischer, ebenfalls mit 2 Bergführern, 6 Sherpas und 8 Kunden. Ziel dieser kommerziellen Expeditionen war die Besteigung des Mount Everest (8848 m), wobei insgesamt 8 Menschen aufgrund der Verkettung falscher Entscheidungen zu Tode kamen und mehrere Personen schwer verletzt zurückkehrten.
