In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten wird ein einseitig defizitorientiertes Modell psychotherapeutischer Tätigkeit zunehmend kritisiert. Die pointiert vorgetragene Alternative lautet Ressourcenorientierung. Spätestens seit den 1980er-Jahren wird der Aktivierung der Ressourcen von Klienten in den unterschiedlichen Anwendungsfeldern der Psychologie eine zentrale Bedeutung zugesprochen. Dies gilt übrigens nicht nur in der Psychotherapie, sondern ganz allgemein in den in unterschiedlichen psychologischen Beratungsfeldern (vgl. Nestmann, 1996) sowie in der Prävention, der Bewältigungsforschung und in der Gesundheitspsychologie (vgl. Becker, 1995).
