Homo homini lupus (Plautus, ca. 250 v. Chr. bis ca. 184v. Chr., aufgegriffen vom englischen Philosophen Thomas Hobbes) — der Mensch ist dem Menschen Wolf. Wir sind nicht friedlich, Aggression ist eine urmenschliche Eigenschaft. Dass ein gewisses Maß an Aggressivität uns allen innewohnt, lässt sich evolutionär begründen: Nur, wer seine eigenen Interessen durchzusetzen vermag, also bereit ist, einem anderen absichtlich zu schaden, kann sich letztlich behaupten. In abgemilderter Form kommt uns Aggression auch heute noch in unserer zivilisierten Gesellschaft zugute, beispielsweise bei Wettbewerben, bei denen es darum geht — in gewissen Schranken —, einen anderen zu besiegen, das heißt, diesen an der Erreichung seiner Ziele zu hindern.
