Abstract
The main topics in this chapter are Encephalocele, Hydrocephalus, Craniosynostosis and Brain Injuries. Encephalocele is considered in fair detail, covering the description and diagnosis including differentials. The surgical management, complications and prognosis are notated.
Hydrocephalus is classified carefully and the signs listed. The pre-operative work-up and indications for surgery are outlined. The importance of anti-sepsis of the insertion of a shunt is emphasised in the surgical description .
Puncture of the ventricle is illustrated, as is the insertion of a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt. Craniosynostosis with its several cranial deformities as tabulated and surgery, which is somewhat controversial, outlined.
Brain Injuries are considered and tabulated in some detail. Their evaluation and management is outlined, including the Glasgow coma scale for young children. There is a special section for skull fractures. Therapeutic concepts are noted, as is the prognosis.
