Abstract
Reverse logistics deals with the organization of the various processes which are necessary for returning waste materials and used goods to their producers resp. into the economic cycle. In the first section of this paper, the impact of reverse logistics on the improvement of the economic and ecological performance of an economy is discussed. Compared to the traditional flow economy, such a closed-loop economy implies savings of raw materials and energy on the input side and of landfill capacity on the output side of the production process, so that the economic and ecological efficiency of the enterprises and of the economy as a whole can be improved. This generates on one hand advances towards a sustainable development, on the other hand considerable cost reductions to some or even all of the enterprises involved.
The second section deals with the evolution of reverse logistics. A typology of its different appearances and relevant dimensions is given and the models and methods employed are discussed. Network structures used to organize reverse logistics are dealt with in the third section. Starting with a classification of recycling processes, internal recycling, recycling cells and recycling networks are presented as the characteristic recycling structures. Recycling networks can be classified into two subsections: Voluntary recycling networks are operated by the participants because of the economic profit generated, whereas compulsory recycling networks only exist due to legal force. The paper closes with an outline of the future perspectives of networks in reverse logistics.
