Das Interesse an der Dynamik von Netzwerken reicht bis in die Anfänge der Etablierung einer sozialwissenschaftlichen Netzwerkanalyse zurück. Einige der klassischen Datensätze der Netzwerkanalyse basieren auf zeitlich geordneten Netzwerkmessungen (z.B. Newcomb 1961). Allerdings blieben die Auswertungen solcher Daten lange auf einer deskriptiven, allenfalls komparativ-statischen Ebene. Methodisch brauchbare statistische Verfahren, die die empirischen Mechanismen der Evolution2 von Netzwerken beschreiben, haben sich erste Mitte der neunziger Jahre entwickelt3. Neben datenbasierten Ansätzen entwickelten sich spieltheoretische und zufallsbasierte Simulationen und Modelle von Netzwerken, die eine Erklärungsleistung bezüglich der Dynamik von Netzwerken besitzen und Konzepte für eine empirische Modellierung von Netzwerkdynamiken liefern.

Anknüpfend an Doreian und Stokman (1997), ist es sinnvoll, hier zwischen den Begriffen Dynamik und Evolution von sozialen Netzwerken zu unterscheiden. Der Begriff Dynamik ist allgemeiner und beschreibt die Veränderung von Netzwerken über die Zeit. Der Begriff Evolution ist strenger und impliziert die Beschreibung eines Netzwerksprozesses über einen erklärenden und verstandenen Mechanismus.
Wasserman und Faust (1994: 731) haben noch 1994 erklärt: „Good, easy-to-use methods for longitudinal network data would be an important addition to the literature“.
