Das Wort ›Tod‹ (mhd. ›tōt‹, ahd. ›tōd‹) geht ebenso wie ›Tier‹ vermutlich auf die indogermanische Wurzel ›*dheu-‹ »stieben, blasen, atmen« zurück und bedeutet dann ursprünglich so viel wie »das Leben aushauchen«.
